TONE refers to the narrator/speaker's attitudes. It can and does shift with the moods and subjects of the writing. The tone is very tied into what is happening in the story. It is discussed in terms of emotion; it is not something one can point to on a page. It is created through the author's choices of technique (diction, figurative language, syntax, et cetera.)
VOICE does not belong to the author, it belongs to the speaker; it is the speaker's personality. It shifts infrequently, only when and if the narrator is dynamic. It is discussed in terms of character. It is also an effect created by the author's use of technique.
STYLE is the authorial persona and personality. It shifts infrequently, when the author's personality changes.
this link is helpful (http://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/virtualit/fiction/elements.asp?e=5), it's what the in-class handout was based of off.
Again, I'm sorry but I need to fail this. The notes are very short and more information could definately be added. Also, try to add info that we learned about in class. I like the link that you added, and I think that it will be helpful. Just try to add more to your upcoming notes, and relate them to what we are doing in class, and even things that you have done in previous English classes.
ReplyDeleteFiona, great job capturing the core concepts covered in class in a concise, accurate, and thorough manner! I also love your organization because I can just glance at your notes and know in a second what it’s about. Unfortunately though, I am going to have to give you a fail for this note entry because although what you did write is excellent, you did not discuss homework for the period discussed in your entry. You should also try to include more connections between ideas because these requirements were barely present in your entry, if at all.
